How to register a Drone in India?

As the popularity of drones continues to soar in India, it becomes imperative for enthusiasts and professionals alike to adhere to regulatory frameworks to ensure safe and responsible drone usage. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Indian government have established the DigitalSky platform as a centralized system for drone registration, certification, and training. This comprehensive guide will provide an in-depth walkthrough, combining information from various sources, on how to successfully register a drone in India.



Step 1: Create an Account on DigitalSky

DigitalSky serves as the primary platform for drone registration in India. Follow these steps to get started:

  • Visit the DigitalSky platform.

  • Explore the available forms labeled D-1 through D-5. For a Unique Identification Number (UIN), select Form D-2. Choose Form D-3 if your drone is Nano or Model.

  • Click on "Login and Apply for UIN" to create a DigitalSky account. If you're registering a Nano or Model drone, click on the signup link at the bottom right of the login page.


Step 2: Log into DigitalSky and Fill Out Your Form

  • After creating an account, log in with your credentials.

  • If you have a Nano or Model drone, navigate to the dashboard and choose "Add Exempted Model." Add relevant details and return to the dashboard to select "Add UAS Serial Number."

  • For non-Nano and Model drones, complete Form D-2 with the necessary information, including photos, specifications, and business details.

Step 3: Pay the Fee

Pay the registration fee of ₹100 (approximately USD 1.20) on the DigitalSky platform.


Step 4: Wait for Application Verification

DigitalSky will review your application and forward the information for verification.


Step 5: Receive a UIN

Upon approval, DigitalSky will issue a Unique Identification Number (UIN) for your drone.

Step 6: Mark the UIN on the UA

Once you receive the UIN, mark it on your drone as per regulatory requirements.


Step 7: Apply for UAOP License and Remote Pilot License (RPL)

Use the DigitalSky platform to apply for Unmanned Aircraft Operator Permit (UAOP) and Remote Pilot License (RPL).


Step 8: Install NPNT (No Permission, No Takeoff)

Ensure NPNT compliance by installing the necessary software to gain permission for takeoff.
